As I have gotten older, I have found that if you ask the universe for help, it will listen and send you on the most amazing journeys. Most recently my request has been to find a way to pursue my personal artwork. And the universe answered by helping me find a local group of artists who meet twice a month.

It was at one of these meetings I met Judi Ingram Adkins. I found out that she herself was on a path to pursue her creative passions and also knew a former colleague, Stell Simonton, through an artist’s group they were in together. It was through them that I found out about Jesse’s Little Women Project. I reached out to Jesse and was thrilled to be included as one of the artists.

But once I had the pages, the struggle to create rose to the surface. How to illustrate my sister connection.

I am the eldest of four sisters. Our relationship over the years has had many ups and downs, but through it all we love each other dearly. I also have another set of sisters my heart calls to — my women friends. These are the women the universe sent my way that have had my heart through thick and thin.

So for months I struggled with how to illustrate this sister bond. What to do. Fear and procrastination set in. And then a deadline. And that kicked my creative butt into gear. One morning I awoke with a sister poem that had blossomed in my mind. And with that poem, I had the concept for my pages!

I chose to use collage to illustrate my pages because I wanted the illustration to have the feel of a quilt — with a mix of patterns, colors and textures. The thread I used to connect the hearts is from my late Aunt Mary’s embroidery supplies. I chose the metallic threads because they have the look of spiderweb, which is known to be one of the strongest materials on earth. It perfectly shows how strong the bonds are that connect sisters. Each woman is independent, yet connected to her sisters by the stitched together hearts. My sisters truly reside within my heart whether we are bonded by blood or by soul and that love fills my universe.
