Sylvia Cross, pages 47-61
I chose chapter 4, Burdens, beginning with the sisters' lamenting the end of the holidays following Christmas.

I was born Sylvia Anne on August 8,1958 and my sister, Debra Jean, on October 19,1960.
We always received a new doll each from Santa every Christmas. We both named, mothered, taught and nursed doll injuries with songs, stories and red ink pens.
Anchor 1
I attempted to play with my sister when I was two years old and she was three months old. She received a kiss on the forehead from my child self and the photo taken by our mother created this memory.
Our mother also created a memory where I tossed sand in her eyes that has defined our relationship to this day. Our father insisted that I wanted her to play. Mama insisted not.
The lesson at the end of chapter 4 and the mother’s storytelling is to think of our mercies. Still finding simple truths in this children's book characters, recognizing blessings is what I am trying to do through my art.
